Thadeus Defrees (1855-1888) was American, born in Boston. He was a pupil of George Loring Brown and painted in the style of the French Barbizon School. Defrees exhibited at the Boston Art Club in 1878 (age 23) with acclaim, and shortly thereafter, in 1880 he made his first European trip. He excelled at painting Venetian scenery. By 1882 he opened a studio on Beacon Street in Boston. In 1888 on his second trip to Europe he contracted typhoid fever died in Venice on July 9 at only 33. His work is highly collected as it does not come up for sale as often as more prolific painters of this quality. Classical in style and highly detailed, this is Oil on canvas, signed lower right and dated 1884. Original frame. Measurements with frame 41”X27”, without frame 35”X21”
