The Young Shepherds - Louis Aime Japy

Exquisite oil on canvas by Louis Japy 1840-1916. Signed lower right in spectactular original frame with name plaque. Japy, a pupil of Camille Corot was born in Doubs, France. As a young artist, he traveled to Italy and painted local scenes, honing his craft, but became most esteemed for his scenes of his native France, especially in the Franche-Comte region where he became famous for his landscapes. He was exceptionally well received in France, and amassed many honors and accolades for his work. He exhibited at numerous French Salons beginning in 1864, and won a medal in 1870 and a second place in 1873. Japy became a member of the Societe des Artistes Francais in 1883. He received silver medals at the Expositions Universelles in Paris in both 1889 and 1900, and was made a Chevalier of the Legion d’Honneur in 1906. Today, his work can be seen in many museums worldwide, including in France, where he died in Paris. Must be seen to be truly appreciated!
