He started a career as an architect, but his deteriorating health forced him to turn to his second passion, which was painting. He lived in Lanarkshire and Lancaster before retiring to Kingussies, Scotland. He exhibited prolifically: 10 works at the Royal Scottish Academy 13 works at the Royal Scottish Society of watercolor artists and 89 works at the Glasgow Institute of fine arts.
