French Post-Impressionist River Landscape – Autumn Village- Lucien Delarue
A picturesque French village unfolds along the banks of a gently winding river in this richly colored oil painting by Lucien Delarue (1925–2011). Whitewashed cottages with warm red rooftops nestle among autumn trees, while distant blue mountains rise beneath a luminous sky. The river reflects the surrounding architecture and foliage, creating a composition full of movement, depth, and the romantic charm of the French countryside.
Delarue's expressive brushwork and lively palette bring remarkable energy to this peaceful setting. Layers of turquoise, golden yellow, rust, and deep green contrast beautifully with the soft blues of the distant landscape. His distinctive handling of paint, combining confident strokes with delicate architectural details, reflects the influence of French Post-Impressionism.
Born in Paris in 1925, Delarue studied at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière under the celebrated French painter Yves Brayer. He developed an accomplished career depicting the streets of Paris, French villages, harbors, and landscapes, becoming particularly admired for his atmospheric interpretations of familiar French settings.
His artistic achievements included First Prize and the Vermeil Medal at the Salon Violet, a Gold Medal at the Salon of Vincennes, a Gold Medal at the Salon of Clichy in 1973, and a Silver Medal at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1974. His work was exhibited at the Musée de l'Île-de-France at the Château de Sceaux in 1970, with additional exhibitions in New York and San Francisco. Delarue was a member of the Société des Artistes Français and the French Watercolor Society, and his paintings were acquired by the municipalities of Paris and Clichy.
For interior designers, this painting offers an appealing combination of European sophistication and vibrant color. Its jewel-toned landscape provides a wonderful opportunity to introduce warmth and visual interest into a traditional or transitional interior, while the architectural subject lends itself beautifully to a living room, library, study, or collected gallery wall.
The painting is executed in oil on canvas, signed by the artist at the lower right, and presented in its original ornate gold frame. In good condition, it measures 30 inches by 25.5 inches framed and 23.5 inches by 19.5 inches unframed.
Price: $3,000
