Colorful Post-Impressionist Landscape — Jules Ausset, French, 1868–1955

$2,800.00

This richly colored French Post-Impressionist landscape is by Jules Ausset (1868–1955), a French painter closely connected with the remarkable generation of artists who emerged from Le Havre around the turn of the 20th century. Painted in oil on board and signed lower right, the landscape is animated by an expressive palette of purple, pink and orange across the sky, with trees framing the composition and a small house or rustic structure tucked into the landscape at right.

Ausset was born in Montivilliers, near Le Havre, and studied with Charles Lhuillier at the École des Beaux-Arts du Havre. His fellow students included Raoul Dufy and Othon Friesz, two artists who would become leading figures of Fauvism. This Le Havre artistic circle proved unusually important to the development of modern French painting in the early 20th century.

Ausset was also connected with the Cercle de l'Art Moderne, the progressive Le Havre artists' organization active from 1906 to 1910. The group brought contemporary painting to Normandy during a particularly fertile period in French art. Ausset's own work encompassed landscapes, portraits and still lifes, and the Musée d'art moderne André Malraux in Le Havre holds several examples of his work in its permanent collection. Wikipedia

This landscape is especially appealing for its color. Rather than relying on naturalistic tones, Ausset uses the sky as a field of purple, rose, pink and orange, creating a heightened sense of atmosphere above the darker trees and modest dwelling. The result reflects the increasingly expressive approach to color that transformed French landscape painting in the decades surrounding 1900.

For an interior designer, the painting offers both authentic French artistic history and an unusually versatile palette. The purples, warm pinks and oranges can introduce color into a neutral room or connect beautifully with textiles and furnishings containing similar tones. At nearly 30 inches high in its original frame, it has enough presence to hang independently while remaining an excellent size for a collected gallery wall.

Oil on board. Signed lower right. Original frame.

Measurements: 29.5" × 25.5" framed; 24" × 20" unframed.
