Grand Canal, Venice - Giovanna Castelli
Woman artists were not typical of the time, but Giovanna Castelli was a descendent of Giovanni Paolo Castelli (detto Spadino), and so she was exposed to excellent art from an early age. She studied art in Rome and was heavily influenced by her ancestor and the style of the Flemish masters. She moved to Venice where she fell in love with the city and primarily painted on commission for the upper classes of the city. Her Venice paintings are rarely available, as mosts reside in private European collections. Her work can be found today in many museums, including La Galleria dell'Academia in Venice. This work is oil on canvas, is signed lower left and rests in it's ornate original frame with inscription on verso with name, dated 1875, adding to the value of the painting. Truly lovely work that is impossible to overlook the quality.
Dimensions: 21.5"X17.5" framed, 13.5"X9.5" unframed, note smaller size.
Condition: Very Good
