English Still Life
The artist who painted this fine oil is George Lance (1802-1864), English. He made his debut at the Royal Academy in 1817 at the age of 15! He apprenticed for Benjamin Robery Haydon, who guided young George through the classical art scene. Lance also attended classes at Royal Academy School. Influenced by the Dutch masters, Lance appreciated the still life masterpieces that were very popular with the wealthy. He developed a clientele, the most notable Robert Vernon who was a wealthy tradesman and would go to become the founder of the Tate Museum. Lance’s works were exhibited at the Royal Academy, the British Institution and the Suffolk Street Galleries. In 1873 Christie’s auctioned the contents of Lance’s private studio that contained 400 works. This is a truly fine work, that appears astonishingly lifelike. It is oil on board, signed lower left and dated 1862, partial label on verso.
