William Collins was a highly skilled English painter, an informal pupil of George Moreland. In 1807 he entered the Art School of the Royal Academy.  He started exhibiting at the Academy the very next year. In 1820 he was elected Royal Academician. From 1840 to 1842 he was the librarian of the Royal Academy. Of note:  Collins was the first Victorian artist that commanded prices on his works that were sufficient to sustain a comfortable living. In the early 1800’s his works reached higher prices than the works of George Moreland!   The work is classical, oil on board. Signed lower right.
