This fantastic classical piece is oil on canvas signed lower left in an unusual ornamental original frame. Jacob Marsh was Dutch, born in the Hague and was considered one of the most important painters of the Hague School. Influenced by the Barbizon school, he studied under Huib van Hove. He attended the Academy of Antwerp and then moved to Paris, where he began painting Italian scenes that were popular with the international clientele of the time. The Paris Art dealership Goupil became his exclusive dealer, so impressed they were with his technique. After the Franco-German war, Marie returned to the Hague where he became a member of the "Pulchri Studio". He was reinvigorated, and was able to focused on Dutch scenes and technique of which this painting is an excellent example. Today due to his Goupil connection, there are a large number of his works present in museums and collections in England, France, Canada and the United States.
