Barges by the River - Henri Duhem
Henri Duhem (1860-1941), was considered French, but descended from an old Flemish family. His talent was revealed early and he was enrolled in the drawing classes of Henri Arpine in Paris. He married accomplished painter Marie Sergeant in 1890, and founded the “Ecole de Wissant” with such members as Georges Maroniez and Francis Tattlegrain. In 1923 he held a solo exhibition at the Salon de Tuilleries to much acclaim. In 1932 he he was awarded the Legion d’honneur (which his wife was awarded as well!). He and Marie were exceptionally well connected in the Paris art world, and were avid collectors, particularly of post impressionist art, including significant paintings by Claude Monet and Paul Gauguin, which can be seen at the Musee Marmottan. This work is oil on canvas and is signed lower right. It is in the original frame.
