Antique Colored Botanical Engravings - Examples from a series
These beautifully detailed botanical engravings originate from Phytanthoza Iconographia, the celebrated 18th-century botanical publication created by Johann Wilhelm Weinmann (1683–1741), a German apothecary and botanist based in Regensburg. Produced between 1737 and 1745, the monumental work consisted of eight volumes featuring more than 1,000 richly colored botanical plates, documenting flowers and plants with exceptional artistic and scientific precision.
Phytanthoza Iconographia is widely recognized as one of the earliest major botanical works to employ color mezzotint printing, a technically ambitious process in which prints were color printed and then finished by hand. Many of the plates were executed by Georg Dionysius Ehret, who would later become one of the most influential botanical illustrators of the 18th century.
The engravings offered here date from approximately 1742–1744 and retain the timeless elegance that has made antique botanical prints enduring favorites among interior designers and collectors alike. Their refined color, delicate linework, and historical character allow them to integrate effortlessly into both traditional and contemporary interiors, whether displayed individually or as a curated grouping. Sold individualy, we have a fairly large selection of which these are a few examples. Contact us if you would like to view more in this collection.
