These authentic 18th-century Italian engravings capture the architecture, riverfront and daily life of Rome through the work of Giuseppe Vasi (1710–1782), one of the most important chroniclers of the Eternal City before Piranesi. Engraved from copper plates and printed on period paper, these are original antique works and not later reproductions.
Born in Corleone, Sicily, Vasi moved to Rome in 1736, where he built his career documenting the city’s churches, palaces, bridges, streets and monuments with extraordinary architectural precision. His early series of views associated with the Tiber dates to the 1740s, and he later undertook his monumental Delle Magnificenze di Roma antica e moderna, published between 1747 and 1761. Across ten volumes and approximately 200 views, Vasi created one of the great visual records of 18th-century Rome.
What makes Vasi’s work especially engaging is the combination of architectural accuracy and human observation. His views are not empty studies of buildings. Small figures populate streets and riverbanks, boats travel along the Tiber, carriages move through the city, and everyday activity unfolds beneath Rome’s monumental architecture. Those details give each engraving both historical importance and a surprising sense of life.
For interior designers, these original Italian engravings are exceptionally versatile. The restrained palette, finely engraved linework and naturally aged paper add European history and texture without overwhelming a room. They can introduce an architectural element into a contemporary space, reinforce the character of a traditional interior, or bring a collected, well-traveled quality to a library, study, living room or gallery wall.
A single Vasi engraving has enough presence to stand alone, but the series is particularly effective when several are framed alike and displayed as a pair, trio or larger grouping.
